The Solomon Square Community has been living on the slopes of the Ocean View mountain range belonging to the South African National Parks (SANPARKS). For 38 years the community has been championing the cause to have their presence and community recognised and be serviced by the City of Cape Town. It is a generational dream to see that transition happen. As we speak these documents are being finalised for a historic landmark event.
Feb 2021
Sunshack NPC met with the City of Cape Town to help assist with the immediate needs of the community whilst the commercial transition takes place. The community has poorly provisioned solar, many live with no power and without services in very modest conditions.
Today
We have already brought new solar solutions to 9 dwellings in the Solomon Rasta Camp - including solar panels, batteries, intelligent solar controllers and lighting.
At the same time we started to build the foundation for a class room, which will be used to host the preschool education in the future for the children inside the community.
Future
There is still so much to do and future projects will arise with certainty!
At the moment we will continue to bring solar energy to the community, since there are still many dwellings without access to electricity.
The construction of the classroom foundation is complete, and we are currently fundraising for the completion of the walls and roof.
We begin the inception of a Rastafarian schooling curriculum concept with the community and a team passionate about education in rural settings.
We recently had a botanist test his innovative water testing and real time alert solution and are actively looking at water safety and storage solutions.
There is talk of hydroponic tunnels to create a more viable link of natural food supply and consumption eco environment. We are currently in planning phase and have identified two sections of land to clear.
The dream is a self sustaining eco village model that demonstrates the power of community and living sustainably off the land.
